A freelance journalist was booked on Saturday by the Uttar Pradesh police on charges of trying to malign the image of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath by allegedly posting an “objectionable comment” on Twitter. The family of the journalist, Prashant Kanojia, alleged that he was picked up by policemen in plainclothes from Delhi and brought to Lucknow where he was being questioned. An FIR has been lodged at the Hazratganj police station. The Hazratganj police said in a statement that Mr. Kanojia was arrested after being questioned. ‘Admitted to crime’During questioning, he had admitted to his crime, the police said, adding that they had evidence against him under Sections 500 and 505 of the IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act. His whereabouts are not known. Mr. Kanojia’s location is also not known. As per the FIR, he is charged with trying to malign Mr. Adityanath’s image through an objectionable post but it did not specify the details of the post. One of the last few posts shared by Mr. Kanojia on social media was a video of a woman who was speaking to media claiming that she had sent a marriage proposal to the Chief Minister. Mr. Kanojia had mocked Mr Adityanath over the video and remarked in Hindi: “Ishq chupta nahi chupane se Yogi ji (love cannot be hidden).”As per his official Twitter handle, Mr. Kanojia is an alumnus of IIMC and Mumbai University and has worked with a couple of news organizations.
When Serena Williams made an early exit at the Miami Open, the next generation of women’s tennis wasn’t quite ready to fill the void.Instead it will be former champions Svetlana Kuznetsova and Victoria Azarenka in the final Saturday.Eight-time champion Williams was beaten by Kuznetsova in the fourth round, and then the Russian just kept winning. In the semifinals Thursday, she erased 12 of the 14 break points she faced in a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Timea Bacsinszky.Kuznetsova, 30, is back in the final 10 years after she won the tournament.”It means I’ve been a lot of times out here in front of you guys,” she told the crowd with a laugh.Kuznetsova hadn’t enjoyed much success at Key Biscayne in recent years, but she won four consecutive three-setters to reach the semifinals. At No. 19, she is the lowest-ranked women’s finalist in the event since No. 38 Kim Clijsters earned the 2005 championship.”I’m happy I could hang in there,” Kuznetsova said. “I haven’t been feeling my best, but I’ve been fighting with every ball and trying to run as much as I could.”Azarenka advanced by beating No. 2-seeded Angelique Kerber, 6-2, 7-5. Azarenka, who won the tournament in 2009 and 2011, has yet to drop a set in this year’s tourney and is bidding to become only the third woman to win Indian Wells and Key Biscayne in the same year.Against Kerber, Azarenka broke serve seven times, hit 29 winners and committed only 16 unforced errors.”I stayed very strong in the end,” Azarenka said. “She’s such an amazing player. She got to so many balls; sometimes I just had to watch them. But I’m glad I kept pushing.”advertisementIn men’s play, No. 6-seeded Kei Nishikori overcame five match points and beat No. 16 Gael Monfils 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Next up for Nishikori is a Friday night match against No. 24 Nick Kyrgios, who reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal by beating No. 12 Milos Raonic in a matchup of big servers, 6-4, 7-6 (4).Monfils became soaked with sweat on a steamy afternoon but rallied from a break down in the final set. Nishikori fell behind 0-40 serving at 4-5 but erased those match points and another in that game, and overcame one more match point serving in the 12th game.”I thought I almost gave up the match,” Nishikori said. “It was tough conditions. Especially the last couple of games, I don’t know what I was thinking.”Kyrgios erased all five break points he faced and earned the only service break in the opening game.”To be honest I didn’t think I was going to break during the match,” Kyrgios said. “I came out really energetic and got pretty lucky. That definitely made me more relaxed.”Five-time champion Novak Djokovic will face David Goffin in the other semifinal.American twins Bob and Mike Bryan, who turned 38 this week, lost in the semifinals of doubles to Pierre-Hughes Herbert and Nicolas Mahut, 6-3, 6-3. The Bryans hold a record 16 Grand Slam titles but haven’t won a tournament since August.Kuznetsova earned the first break of her semifinal in the 10th game of the grueling, 65-minute first set. She broke three consecutive times in the second set to pull away from the No. 19-seeded Bacsinszky.”I was playing to finish it in two sets so I have a little bit of time to rest,” Kuznetsova said.If Kuznetsova wins the title, she’ll return to the top 10 for the first time since 2010. She’s already assured of surpassing $20 million in career prize money.Speaking of which: The 15-year veteran weighed in on the recent debate about prize money, saying women on tour deserve the same pay as men.”My thing is, guys that travel can have kids. They can have a family, right?” she said. “We cannot. Since 16, I am a professional. I gave up everything friends, home. We give more than 100 percent. … We’re not taking their money. We just want to earn the same.”However, Kuznetsova said she’s opposed to women playing best-of-five matches in major tournaments, as the men do.”I don’t think it makes sense,” she said. “You will see us struggling, cramping, squeezing and yelling. It’s going to look weird.”
Former WWE Tag Team champions Kofi Kingston and Big E made their presence felt in India as they made a fun-filled appearance in the Indian Premier League extra innings today before the match between Delhi Daredevils and Gujarat Lions. The duo looked ecstatic on being in India and said that they felt welcomed and happy.”It’s been awesome. It’s been just so welcoming. Everyone here is welcoming us into the culture. We got a wonderful reception at the hotel as well,” Kofi said.”It’s great to be here and we’re really happy that everybody is just bringing us in.”On being asked by host Samir Kochhar if they knew of the popularity of WWE in India, Big E said that they have the most number of fans on their Facebook from India.”Of all our Facebook fans across the planet, India is no.1. And the WrestleMania that we hosted, WrestleMania 33, that was the most watched WrestleMania in India.”The WWE duo then had a fun arm wrestling contest with Kochhar and Matthew Hayden, where the Big E brushed aside both of them with ease.Big E mentioned that his workout regime includes “an ‘average’ 575 bench press and some 750 squats.”Capping their overall cricket experience in the cricket-crazy nation that India is, Kofi learned some batting moves from Ravi Shastri and hit away some deliveries from Matthew Hayden.advertisement

The second move was particularly crazy: Roberto parried Saint-Maximin’s shot, who then worked the ball to Almirón just six yards out.He was unable to get his first goal either, however, as his shot was blocked. To cap it off, the ball came out a third time to Shelvey, who hit a curling effort against the crossbar from 25 yards. Shelvey duly got on the scoresheet at the start of the second half, a not entirely overwhelmed Bruce observing Shelvey might have played up because he is a West Ham fan.At three down West Ham woke up, just a little bit. Fabián Balbuena bundled the ball over the line from a corner. With seconds remaining of the 90, Robert Snodgrass scored the best goal of the game, on the volley from the edge of the box. For the five minutes of added time West Ham ran like the clappers. Too late. The half-time lead stood at two, with headers from the defenders Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernández, before a free-kick from Jonjo Shelvey after the break ended the contest.West Ham’s two late goals never looked like more than consolations and it is five matches without a win for the hosts. Newcastle, now four points clear of the drop zone, stand just one point behind them.Manuel Pellegrini has enough experience of looking unflustered in defeat and he calmly observed he would have to “reflect then decide” on his response to this one. The West Ham manager will get that time, but Pellegrini is under pressure, and not just for the run of form. His team came out in front of their own fans and played at the tempo of a training match. They were booed off at half-time and deserved it.The Newcastle strategy was simple: let West Ham advance to the edge of the attacking third, slow it down, rob the ball, hit it into the space behind and let chaos reign. The pace of the three amigos caused West Ham conniptions and it was the direct running of the Paraguayan Almirón that set up the first two goals. When Almirón was hauled down by Issa Diop 20 yards out in the 16th minute, a recalled Shelvey stepped up. His free-kick went to the back post and was met by Joelinton, who nodded it back for Clark to bury it past Roberto. It was well-drilled but caught West Ham by surprise and soon they were undone again by similar means. Almirón’s cross was blocked for a corner. Shelvey took it short this time and the ball went to Jetro Willems. With West Ham’s defence having wasted no time in pushing out, there was lots of space for Willems’s deep cross to hit. Fernández it was who connected at the back post. 11 Snodgrass 27 Ajeti 24 Fredericks (s 72′) 22 Haller Newcastle 10 Saint-Maximin 16 Noble 23 Diop West Ham (s 46′) 13 Roberto 15 Willems match reports 18 Fernandez 24 Almiron 12 Gayle 4 Balbuena 7 3 Match stats 6 Lascelles 14 Hayden Possession 21 Ogbonna 15 Sanchez Read more Share on Facebook Share via Email 8 Felipe Anderson (s 87′) 43 Longstaff Sadio Mané’s last-gasp heroics seal Liverpool’s dramatic win at Aston Villa 30 Atsu NEW31WHU69% (s 46′) 1 Dubravka The Observer West Ham United 25 Martin Substitutes 2 Clark Newcastle United 7 Yarmolenko 3 Cresswell 41 Rice 18 Fornals 5 Zabaleta Reuse this content
